What does an Insulator do?

Insulator mechanics work with different materials to prevent or reduce the passage of heat, cold, moisture, sound or fire in various industrial-commercial-institutional settings – from piping systems to walls, arenas to processing facilities, marine platforms to refineries.

Apprenticeship

In Nova Scotia it takes four years to apprentice as an Insulator (one year equals approximately 2000 hours). Over that time, you are indentured to an employer and work under the supervision of a journeyperson or journeypersons to learn your trade. In addition to the practical hands–on instruction you receive on the jobsite, you will also take classroom training to acquire technical knowledge and theory. As you progress through your training, your knowledge base will grow, your work will become increasing more complex, and your pay will reflect your skills development. With each successful block of training completed, you will receive an increase in pay (as outlined in the collective agreement).
